The release date for the XPERIA X1 has been an odd thing. It started out
due in September, then got
pushed out to October,
then to 2009, then back to
late 2008 and now back to September. Very odd, but very cool!On September 30, the phone
will be available in the UK, German and Swedish markets. Other markets around the world (including North America) are expected sometime in Q4 2008. Here’s hoping for sooner rather than later for the US!

The new HTC Touch Diamond has been getting a lot of press, but does it deserve it? According to Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal, the answer is no (via SlashGear).
His main gripes are that the phone doesn’t hide the flaw of Windows Mobile very well, and the screen is far too small to try to do some of the iPhone tricks. In particular, the smaller screen makes the on-screen keyboard very difficult to use.
He’s a big fan of the TouchFLO 3D interface, but simply wishes it did a better job of hiding the Windows Mobile engine behind it. This should really tell Microsoft something, when phones are better when users can even see that they’re running Windows Mobile.
It makes me wonder how well the XPERIA X1 will be, since it uses a similar tactic — hiding WinMo behind a custom interface. The X1 is due out in a few months, so some early reviews should start trickling in soon.

A few days ago, we told you that the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 was delayed until “December or January”. Sony has now come out and said that the phone is still on target to come out in Q4 of this year. That could still mean December, but at least it rules our January (in theory).
The relevent snippet, from IntoMobile:
“There is absolutely no delay. The product is on track,” Sony Ericsson spokeswoman Merran Wrigley said. “We have said it will roll out in Q4 and we are on target to do that.”
I’m anxious to see this phone, so hopefully they can stick to the Q4 target.

The further out they push this thing, the less excited I get. We first mentioned this phone back in February, then expected it in mid-September, then pushed it back for an October release.
Now it appears the phone won’t be out until December or January. According to IntoMobile, the reason for the delay is issues with Windows Mobile 6.1. Hopefully they can get their act together soon, because it still looks like a pretty cool phone.

We were hoping it would show up in mid-September, but it looks like we weren’t too far off. According to Unwired View, the phone will be released sometime during the week of October 6th.
This hasn’t been officially announced by Sony, but it looks to be a pretty solid date. let’s hope they’re right, because I’m anxious to see this phone in action!

As reported by PHONE Magazine, Handango has (mistakenly?) confirmed a mid-September release date for the X1. See the image below:

I’m very anxious to see this phone, so I hope the information is accurate.

WMExperts have finally gotten their hands on an X1 and they’re doing a great job of testing it out.
You can read their full review for details, but here are the highlights:
- Keyboard: Pretty good, not great.
- Screen: Awesome.
- Flash lite will be pre-installed.
All in all, they really seem to like it. Here are a bunch of screens:

Microsoft officially announced Windows Mobile 6.1, along with an upgrade for Internet Explorer Mobile. In a similar move, Sony officially announced that the XPERIA X1 will be running Windows Mobile 6.1, news which was already assumed but not yet verified.
The X1 will have WM 6.1 behind the scenes, but will have a custom UI running on top of it, which will “enable a highly user-focused experience with enhanced connectivity, messaging and multimedia features”.
The more I hear about the X1, the more excited I get about it. I hope it can live up to the hype.

I’m pretty sure this will be the form factor of my next phone. I like the idea of a big touch screen on top, with a QWERTY sliding out from below. I’m leading more toward the Sony XPERIA X1, but there’s a number of nice choices on the horizon.
Here are handful of nice photos of the phone, as found at HowardForums (via PhoneMag):

It looks possible. While showing off the X1 at CeBIT in Germany earlier this week, some sharp-eyed viewers noticed an AT&T logo on the screen.
IntoMobile muses a few questions:
- Are they trying to indirectly pitch AT&T through the media?
- Or is the deal already done and they’re just waiting for the release?
Only time will tell, but as an AT&T customer I sure hope it’s true!
