No background applications using iPhone SDK

March 8th, 2008

Apple iPhoneDespite all of the positive things that have come out about the iPhone SDK, one big negative keeps coming back — applications can’t run in the background. You have to run them, then close them, and they go away.

An example provided by TechCrunch:

instant messaging applications (we saw a demo of an AIM version at the event today), can’t run in the background and collect messages while you are doing something else. Leave the application to take a phone call, and it shows you offline. The bottom line is – any application that wants to periodically interact with the web to do stuff, won’t be able to on a continual basis.

IntoMobile had similar thoughts:

Don’t tell me that you’ll run only one application at a time either, that isn’t how you use your PC and it definitley will not be how you use your mobile phone. I don’t care how beautiful AIM for the iPhone will be, if I can’t read a movie recommendation, launch the web browser to read the IMDB score, watch the trailer with emTube or MobiTubia, and then call someone to see if they want to join me, then I don’t want that device.

I agree completely with both of them. Many of the best applications on my N95 are ones that I can keep running 24/7. This just seems really short-sighted.

What’s the reason? Technical problem? Lack of horsepower on the phone? Anyone have any ideas?

Most of the talk is getting into the details of the SDK, but the big news is that it is available today! I expect we’ll see a LOT of cool apps in the very near future.
