Android becomes official on Septmber 23; launches October 20

September 16th, 2008

The Android-powered HTC Dream (also known as the “G1″) is almost upon us.  It will apparently be unveiled on September 23, with a launch date of October 20.

The price is expected to be roughly $200 with a two-year contract, or about $400 without.  At this point, it will only be available on T-Mobile.  Blech.

HTC Touch Diamond apparently not so great

September 4th, 2008

The new HTC Touch Diamond has been getting a lot of press, but does it deserve it?  According to Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal, the answer is no (via SlashGear).

His main gripes are that the phone doesn’t hide the flaw of Windows Mobile very well, and the screen is far too small to try to do some of the iPhone tricks. Â In particular, the smaller screen makes the on-screen keyboard very difficult to use.

He’s a big fan of the TouchFLO 3D interface, but simply wishes it did a better job of hiding the Windows Mobile engine behind it.  This should really tell Microsoft something, when phones are better when users can even see that they’re running Windows Mobile.

It makes me wonder how well the XPERIA X1 will be, since it uses a similar tactic — hiding WinMo behind a custom interface. Â The X1 is due out in a few months, so some early reviews should start trickling in soon.

First photos of a live Android-powered phone: the HTC Dream

August 31st, 2008

Engadget has posted the first good photos of the HTC Dream, running Google’s Android OS. The phone is clearly branded for T-Mobile, and we’re hoping these photos mean that it’s coming very soon. Enjoy!

HTC to launch the “Fuze”, as well as an Android powered phone

August 18th, 2008

The forthcoming HTC Touch Pro reportedly will be dubbed the “Fuze” with AT&T. There is still no release date yet, but PHONE Magazine says it’s coming “sooner rather than later”. I’m a sucker for any phone with a slide out QWERTY, so this one is on my radar.

Also, the HTC Dream, long rumored to be the first phone powered by Google’s Android OS, may be coming out on November 10. The phone has just received FCC approval, with confidentiality until November 10, 2008. This seems to imply that the phone will be released on that day.

It was earlier thought to be coming in September or October, but this isn’t too bad — as long as that’s the release date.

Hands-on with the HTC Touch Diamond

August 10th, 2008

IntoMobile has recieved an HTC Touch Diamond to review, and they seem to love it! Some highlights from their review:

  • It’s considerably smaller than the iPhone and seems “cute”.
  • It’s “the slickest Windows Mobile handset” they’ve ever used.
  • The TouchFLO 3D interface is superb.
  • The GPS works well enough.
  • The on-screen keyboard works well, but could be tough for a lot of folks on the smaller screen.

All in all, they seem quite impressed. Read their full review for more information.
