All about the T-Mobile Android G1

September 23rd, 2008

The first Android-powered phone, T-Mobile’s G1, was officially released today.  It comes preloaded with a varity of Google Applications (Search, Maps, Gmail, Calendar, Google Talk and YouTube).  The Gmail app has most of the features of the web version (labels, conversations, etc) and Maps comes with StreetView built-in.

The phone itself isn’t a slouch either.  It has a 3.2-inch TFT-LCD (at 320×480 resolution) and a full QWERTY keyboard.  It has a 3.2 megapixel camera, and 8 gigs 1 gig of storage (plus a microSD slot).  The phone does not have video capabilities, and it’s chained to the T-Mobile network.  Undoubtedly, a unlock crack will be developed quickly.

Here is a video produced by Google showing off the phone:

And here are a bunch of photos of the device.  It sure looks slick!

32GB iPhone on the way?

September 21st, 2008

According to engadget, the 32GB iPhone might be here as soon as next week. Considering the 16GB model came out of nowhere in February, this certainly seems possible.  In fact, I’m a little surprised we haven’t seen the 32GB model yet.

Shortages of the 8GB iPhone are becoming more widespread, which is fuel speculation of the 32GB arrival.  This is possible, or it might just be a resource shift as Best Buy gets rolling.  Either way, we’ll find out soon!

Android becomes official on Septmber 23; launches October 20

September 16th, 2008

The Android-powered HTC Dream (also known as the “G1″) is almost upon us.  It will apparently be unveiled on September 23, with a launch date of October 20.

The price is expected to be roughly $200 with a two-year contract, or about $400 without.  At this point, it will only be available on T-Mobile.  Blech.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 coming in a few weeks

September 10th, 2008
The release date for the XPERIA X1 has been an odd thing. It started out due in September, then got pushed out to October, then to 2009, then back to late 2008 and now back to September. Very odd, but very cool!On September 30, the phone will be available in the UK, German and Swedish markets. Other markets around the world (including North America) are expected sometime in Q4 2008. Here’s hoping for sooner rather than later for the US!

Apple news from today: iPhone 2.1, new iPods, iTunes 8

September 9th, 2008

Apple released all of their new stuff today, and it was mostly what we predicted a few days ago. People are feeling a bit let down, but I think that’s largely because most of the presentation had already leaked.

The only decent surprise was “genius”, which runs in iTunes and on your iPod/iPhone. This is the main new feature of iTunes 8, which was just released. Based on what you’re listening to, it will suggest other songs to play. This information will up loaded each week to Apply (opt-in, anonymized) to help improve the algorithm. I’m skeptical of how well it will work, but you never know.

Next was the revamped line of iPods, featuring the new iPod Nano. The main thing with it is that is looks like a second gen (tall and skinny) but plays video like the third gen. The leaked photo we showed you back in August proved to be the real thing.

It now comes with an accelerometer, to help it know when you’ve rotated the screen and so you can shake it to shuffle your playlist. $149 for the 8GB (available now), and $199 for the 16GB (available in the next few days).

They showed off some new app games for the iPhone and Touch, but nothing real exciting.

The iPhone and iPod Touch got the version 2.1 firmware, as expected. You can get it on Friday. According to Jobs, you’ll have “Fewer dropped calls, big battery life improvements. No crashes with Apps, backing up is faster.” No mention of Background Push Notification, so I guess they’re still have problems with that.

That’s really about it. I really thought we’d see some kind of Macbook refresh, but it didn’t materialize. I’m anxious to get home and try out iTunes 8. I’ll report back later with my thoughts on those.

HTC Touch Diamond apparently not so great

September 4th, 2008

The new HTC Touch Diamond has been getting a lot of press, but does it deserve it? According to Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal, the answer is no (via SlashGear).

His main gripes are that the phone doesn’t hide the flaw of Windows Mobile very well, and the screen is far too small to try to do some of the iPhone tricks. In particular, the smaller screen makes the on-screen keyboard very difficult to use.

He’s a big fan of the TouchFLO 3D interface, but simply wishes it did a better job of hiding the Windows Mobile engine behind it. This should really tell Microsoft something, when phones are better when users can even see that they’re running Windows Mobile.

It makes me wonder how well the XPERIA X1 will be, since it uses a similar tactic — hiding WinMo behind a custom interface. The X1 is due out in a few months, so some early reviews should start trickling in soon.

Nokia N96 starts shipping!

September 3rd, 2008

We posted previously about when the Nokia N96 might ship (July? October?) and we were wrong both times — it’s shipping now! The phone will cost 550€ before taxes and subsidies, which seems a bit steep to me. Maybe I’m missing something, but isn’t it just an N95 with more memory and a slightly larger screen? Don’t get me wrong, I loved my N95, but the cost seems a bit steep.

Still, if you’ve got the money, this is a great phone to have.

Sony XPERIA still delayed, but maybe not by as much

September 2nd, 2008

A few days ago, we told you that the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 was delayed until “December or January”. Sony has now come out and said that the phone is still on target to come out in Q4 of this year. That could still mean December, but at least it rules our January (in theory).

The relevent snippet, from IntoMobile:

“There is absolutely no delay. The product is on track,” Sony Ericsson spokeswoman Merran Wrigley said. “We have said it will roll out in Q4 and we are on target to do that.”

I’m anxious to see this phone, so hopefully they can stick to the Q4 target.
