Samsung Cellular Phones

December 2nd, 2008

Samsung is a a well known and highly respected company in the electronics industry as a whole. They make high quality HDTV’s, phones, and even digital cameras. They are well known in the mobile space for their extremely stylish and functional cellular phones. They make an extremely wide variety of phones, but their most interesting phone currently is the Samsung Instinct, their competitor to the iPhone.

Samsung also makes a nice variety of advanced texting phones with QWERTY keyboards built in. Clearly this is a company that gets that typing texts using a numeric pad is like torture. It takes forever and it just not intuitive, no matter how you try and slice it.

Samsung Instinct

The Instinct is a phone carried exclusively by Sprint. It has a touchscreen, high-speed wireless connectivity, a landscape QWERTY keyboard, Live TV, full-fledged web browser, 2 megapixel camera/camcorder, GPS navigation, and a kitchen sink. Ok, maybe not a kitchen sink, but perhaps they’ll fit it in the next revision. Of course, the phone needs all these features just to stay in lock step with the iPhone.

That brings up an important point. Because of the touchscreen and the overall design of this device, it is hard to see it as anything other than an iPhone clone. It doesn’t matter how good or bad it is, it’s not an iPhone. For some people that’s a good thing and for some people, that’s not the best thing in the world. For me, if I were to create a phone, I’d try and rip off the iPhone to start with. Then I’d work on making the best software possible.

Samsung Propel

The Propel is a new phone that is appearing on the AT&T carrier. It is a pretty sweet little phone. It has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for easy texting ability. This also gives the phone some advanced capabilities without becoming big and bulky. It’s a fantastic compromise and makes for a great little phone. It is probably my favorite new phone to come out this fall.

Also, you may have noticed the Ozzy Ozborne commercials featuring this phone. They’re pretty funny. Ozzy is incohrent and this phone makes texting easy. Simple, but it works. A great marketing campaign for a great little phone. Well played Samsung and AT&T.
