Gmail Mobile Phone Edition

It shouldn’t surprise anyone who uses it that Gmail is the most useful, and among the most popular of all free e-mail services. Yet, if you have a mobile phone you realize how many of those great features you really miss using a mobile phone e-mail client. However, there are a select few phones that really do the whole Gmail service justice.

The most obvious of course, is the new phone from T-Mbile and Google. Since this built by Google and Google software, it just makes sense that e-mail integration with e-mail service works very well. If you want, you can use either the built-in e-mail client and access GMail via push mail, or You’ve access Gmail directly via the web browser. Personally, I think setting up Gmail using the IMAP protocol so that changes are made automatically across all devices works extremely well. This is also my preferred option, using the iPhone.

As I just mentioned the iPhone works incredibly well for this too. The iPhone and iPod touch is built in e-mail client serves me quite well. It is especially useful when combined with the Google Apps for my domain program which allows you to run your e-mail through Google from your own domain. Of course, if I don’t want to use the built I can always opt to just going directly to Gmail that in using that from the web browser. This is more useful when I’m using someone else’s iPhone or iPod touch but having the option to vote is very, very nice.

While Google does not have specific mail client for devices other than the Android worthy iPhone, they didn’t have instructions for setting up e-mail using the Blackberry, Symbian, Windows mobile five, windows mobile six, or SnapperMail platforms. I’ve never used any of these platforms, so I’m not sure how well they work. However it is good to see that Google at least is working hard to wear every platform possible.

Although this is a stark contrast to other free e-mail service providers such as Hotmail. That only seem to want to connect with Windows Mobile devices. Personally, I think the whole Windows Mobile platform is a joke compared to an iPhone, but many people swear by these devices, so at least Google supports them. Microsoft would do well to try and create better support for hot devices such as the iPhone. Even if it is competing directly with devices of their own.
