Cell Phone Comparisons
Making cell phone comparison can be tricky. Most of the time when comparing two phones, unless you are comparing both phones on the same service provider, and both phones have the same intended objective, you are really comparing apples to oranges. For example, comparing the brand-new iPhone 3G to a two-year-old basic Nokia phone doesn’t make any sense. Obviously the iPhone would be way more expensive, but at the same time would provide more features. The Nokia phone would be much cheaper, but Would provide much less functionality. So what would be the better buy? That is not an easy question to answer.
I think the much smarter way to go is to ask yourself a few things. First, what phones are available from my cell phone provider? Your cell phone provider largely controls, what phones are available and at what price, so the cell phone provider will also be the biggest deciding factor in terms of availability of phones. Often times, they cell phone provider will only carry certain phones, or will have exclusive contracts for certain phones. A good example of this is the iPhone is only available from AT&T. Verizon is the only place you can get the Blackberry Storm. While it would be nice to up be able to buy the iPhone and use on Verizon, that just can’t happen. Apple and AT&T won’t allow it.
The next factor you should consider his price. The newest phone might be cool, but do you really want to spend $200 just to get it? That free phone might provide everything you need without costing you a penny up front. Also, with cell phone providers trying to bundle in their mobile Internet service. You should considnder how much some of these extra services will cost you. The Internet service on the iPhone is very expensive, especially since they charge you per phone and that adds up very quickly.
The last factor in perhaps the most obvious is functionality. Do you need texting capability? Do you want to take pictures or send e-mail? What about games? For most people is simple phone that can make and receive phone calls is more than enough, but at almost all new phones now come with some form of texting or QWERTY keyboard, built right in. These features at one time cost a premium.
That brings up one other factor to consider. Phones tend to come down this very quickly, as new phone models come out. For example, once the iPhone was out up for about a year. Its price had dropped from $500 or $600 to only $200. That is a huge price drop and you should really consider if you want to be one of those early adopters, who pays the price premium, or one of the late adopters, who gets to reap the savings.
As I said originally, comparing cell phones is not exactly straightforward. Now that you know the different considerations.
