ATT Cell Phones
AT&T is one of the oldest phone companies in the country. In fact, at one point it was such a large company that the government decided to break it up into pieces. Now, decades later, AT&T is once again nearly as large as they once were, but they aren’t quite as dominant. However, one area where AT&T is still a major player is in the cell phone business. ATT carries the best cell phones.
There is no debating that AT&T carries the best cell phones. Why can I say that? Two words: Apple iPhone. It’s a game changer and you can’t write about AT&T’s phone lineup without mentioning it. It’s just that good. Of course there are others too, and we’ll get to those, but you gotta start with the iPhone.
Apple iPhone
The iPhone launched in the summer of 2007. It landed like a nuclear bomb on the whole mobile phone industry. Overnight all other phones looked like they were designed in the 90’s. The future was here and it was all about the touchscreen iPod/Phone/GPS/Smartphone/E-Mail/Web Browsing/Kitchen Sink device that was small enough to fit in your pocket. Apple took their obvious design expertise and created what might be called the “perfect” phone.
The touchscreen was such a revolution that overnight almost every other phone manufacturer was doing their best to clone the iPhone. While there were some worthy knock-offs, the iPhone is still king. Even the Blackberry Storm from RIM is an iPhone knockoff at besst. The iPhone is the original and it will probably never be bested by an imitation. It will take a significant game-changing device to dethrone the iPhone, and that is not likely to arrive in the next five or ten years.
After the monumental success of the initial iPhone, Apple continued to innovate with the easy to use App Store. Now 3rd party software developers can create and sell iPhone software directly to customers. It is a brilliant model that once again, every other company is doing their best to copy. Yet, as always, Apple nailed it and is reaping the benefits of their innovation. The closest competitor in this regard is Google’s G1 phone using the Android platform, but for the time being that is only on T-Mobile, so it remains to be seen if it could become a real compeititor to the iPhone.
Bottom line, the iPhone is king and AT&T is the only game in town as far as the iPhone is concerned. They have a multi-year exclusive contract with Apple, so it is unlikely that we will see the iPhone on any other carrier for the next five years unless something drastic changes for Apple and AT&T.
Texting Phones
Texting is absolutely huge. Everybody and their mother are sending text messages via sms. It’s crazy. Spend some time hanging out with a teenager with a cell phone and you’ll see them texting their friends nearly constantly. It’s a constrant communication stream and there are some phones that make life much easier in this regard.
Anyone who uses a computer knows that it is so much easier to type on a QWERTY keyboard than it is on a mobile phone. A numeric pad was never intended for text input. AT&T now has many QWERTY phones available such as the Samsung Propel, AT&T Quickfire, AT&T Tilt, Samsung Blackjack 2, Blackberry Pearl, Blackberry 8820, Blackberry Bold, Pantech Slate, and Pantech Matrix. Obviously, the iPhone is fantastic for text messaging as well.
In general, AT&T does a fantastic job of providing a wide array of quick texting QWERTY phones. They have such a big selection that no matter what your budget is, if you are dead-set on sending lots of text messages, ATT is going to provide a cellular phone to suit your needs.
