More about the Garmin Nuvifone
A couple of juicy tidbits about the Garmin Nuvifone.
First, Unwired View is reporting that the phone might be available in white, to go along with the expected black model. Mock-ups of the white version can be seen to the right. It looks nice!
Also, Laptop Magazine has a five minute hands-on video with the phone. It sounds like the phone is progressing well and has a ton of potential, but still needs quite a bit of work. (via IntoMobile)
Here is their video:
Three new LG phones coming to Verizon
Three new phones from LG are coming to Verizon in the near future.
All three look to be pretty good phones. The LG Dare (pictured on the right) is somewhat of an iPhone clone, the LG Decoy feels a bit like a Nokia N95, and the LG Chocolate 3 is more of a standard flip phone like the Razor.
All three phones support the VCAST garbage and all have decent (but not great) cameras. The Dare sports a 3.2 megapixel camera, while the other two phones have the typical 2.0 megapixel.
More info about these phones can be found on PhoneMag, and we expect to learn more about release dates and pricing in the near future.
Qik coming to the iPhone
I love Qik on my N95. I shoot videos fairly often with it, and it’s a superb little tool. Today, Qik announced that a version is coming out for the iPhone!
According to Mashable, the alpha version is expected next week, presumably only for jailbroken iPhones. It’s assumed that they’re making an official app for it for the version 2 iPhones, but they’ve not announced that yet.
Here is a brief video showing it off:
2.0 Firmware for iPhone coming on June 27th?
Thanks to some sharp eyes at iClarified, it appears that the 2.0 firmware could be coming out on June 27th. Apple’s Australian iPod touch page had some text that read “Shop for hundreds of applications made for iPod touch. Available June 27.”
The text has been removed, but you can see it in the image on the right.
TomTom coming to the 3G iPhone
TomTom has announced that they have a software solution for the 3G iPhone that “runs on the iPhone already“, though they haven’t given a specific release date.
This could certain cause some headaches at Garmin. Their Nuvifone looks pretty neat, but will reportedly cost $500 with a contract, which suddenly looks very expensive when compared to the $199 iPhone. Of course, we have no idea what the TomTom software for the iPhone will cost, so some of the diffrence is likely to be chewed up. I’d expect to see more news on this very soon.
Details on the new iPhone
There’s been a ton of news today about the new iPhone, so I thought I’d try to give a brief summary:
The good
- July 11 release
- 3G, as expected.
- GPS. There are already some great looking applications to take advantage of it.
- $199 for the 8 gig model, $299 for the 16 gig. They both require a two-year contract from AT&T.
- 300 hours of standby time
- 5-6 hours of browsing
- 7 hours of video
- 24 hours of audio
- Talk time is 5-10, depending if you’re using 3G or not.
- A ton of new apps you can download.
- Slightly modified design — thinner body, more tapered edges
- Free upgrade to version 2.0 for existing iPhones, though they obviously won’t get 3G or GPS. $9.95 to upgrade your iPod Touch.
The bad
- Still no MMS. Why?
- No native video support, though I presume that you’ll be able to download an app to handle it.
- No 32 gig version.
- No front camera for live video chat, as was suggested in a few places.
- Same camera on the back. I was expecting an upgrade there.
All in all it looks to be a very solid update, but nothing remarkable. I was very impressed by the $199 price, but that’s tempered a bit now that I know it requires a two-year contract.
Now, do I try to get the new iPhone or do I keep using my N95?
Live updates from WWDC 08
I’m following a few great live feeds from WWDC, and highly recommend them. A handful of the much-touted live feeds are having issues, but these two are holding up pretty well:
If you don’t want to follow it all in real-time, we’ll write a full summary of new iPhone news later today. Stay tuned!
Google Maps for Mobile has been updated
One of my favorite applications, Google Maps for Mobile, has been updated! This version brings bus, train and ferry information right into your mobile device.
Point your mobile browser here to download the app, you can read more about it on the Digital Earth Blog, or you can watch the video below for more about this new release:
