The latest update for the iPhone, version 1.1.3, is expected next week. Among the list of updates:
“My Location” in Google Maps, a GPS-like feature that triangulates your position using cell tower information.
Google Maps will now have a hybrid map view.
Drag icons to move them around the Springboard (main screen).
The home screen supports multiple pages.
You can add web bookmarks to your home screen.
SMS sending to multiple people.
The bad news — all third party apps and unlocks that you have loaded will be killed. Still, it sounds like a pretty good update. Here is a video of icons being dragged around the screen.
It is indeed a very impressive list. They make the case that it was the best year ever for Nokia in terms of great new hardware, and I certainly can’t argue with that.
David Pogue, tech columnist for the New York Times, has chosen the iPhone’s visual voicemail as the best new feature of 2007.
I almost think it’s a bad choice because it was such an obvious feature, but no one else had done it before. The iPhone is certainly lacking in a lot of places (no GPS, no MMS, etc), but it certainly has brought a lot of innovation to the market. As a result of the iPhone, 2008 should bring some incredible new devices.
A new version of the awesome emTube player has been released. This software will allow you to browse YouTube and play videos, and it works on any phone running Symbian s60 3rd edition (like the Nokia N95).
Rumor has it that Apple may be bringing back the Newton in the second half of 2008, in the form of essentially a big iPhone – 5.2 inch, 800×480 screen.
The Newton got a bad rap back in the day, but was really quite an awesome device by the end. Here’s hoping this device makes it to market!
Prototypes of phones running Google’s Android OS have been popping up, and now we have rumors that the phone may debut at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona in February.
IntoMobile has some pics and info about the upcoming Asus M930W. It looks capable of competing with the Nokia E90, but more info will be needed before we can say that for sure.
It’s unknown whether or not it’ll have a GPS, and the internal screen looks pretty small. Other than that, it’s a pretty nice looking device.
